‘Remote is here to stay! Hybrid is the new normal’

The switch from on-site interpreting to remote interpreting is not straightforward and smooth. What do you as an interpreter need to know before you start? How do you get the most out of your Remote Simultaneous Interpreting projects? What are the possibilities? And what does the future hold for our profession? During this talk, I will be focusing mainly on interpreters who are currently not working remotely or who have little experience of it. However, interpreters who have already made the switch will also receive useful tips. Do you know how to share a digital notepad in real time? How can you use an audio mixer so that you do not have to swap headphones when working with two devices?

Why did the register interpreters and translators decide to take action against the Minister of Justice and Security last year? Why should interpreters and translators join forces? Why work together and not alone? By yourself, you cannot make a strong enough fist. By yourself, you will not be heard. In her presentation, Ani Getcheva talks about the power of the group and working with ZZP Nederland, a foundation that looks out for freelancers’ rights. She briefly introduces the ‘Orde van Registertolken en -vertalers’ (Order of register interpreters and translators) that was founded on 15 December 2020. Ani also tells more about the Order’s mission and goals.

Simultaneous interpreters help each other in the booth: when it is not your turn, you listen to the source speech, take notes and look up terminology. That is how we were all taught, right? But suppose that the person who is not interpreting needs a rest? You are entirely at the mercy of the speaker. Or are you? That may soon be a thing of the past: automatic speech recognition has reached the stage where you can use it to have those problematic items appear automatically and quickly on your laptop screen. My presentation is about three experiments we have carried out with the software prototype (InterpretBank).
