Workshop How will your CAT tool look like in 5-10 years from now?

This interactive workshop will give the floor to the audience to discuss the following topic: How will your CAT tool look like in 5-10 years from now? The participants will be invited to discuss the current problems with their CAT tool (s) and describe how they envision their future tool (s) in the light of the recent technology advances: cloud-based translation environments, integration of machine translation and online resources, speech recognition, and automatic quality checks. What are the expectations from the CAT tools developers and how can translators influence the future developments? The participants will be split in 5 groups, will have about 20 min to discuss their favorite topic, and 5 min to present the outcome of their discussion.
Target audience: users of CAT tools.
Iulianna van der Lek-Ciudin is a predoctoral researcher and lecturer in computer-assisted translation. As a researcher, she has been investigating usability issues in current translation environments, translators’ methods of acquiring terminology and human factors in machine translation quality evaluation. Iulianna is also collaborating with INSTB members to investigate the impact of collaborative translation projects on the students’ soft skills in simulated translation bureau’s. As a certified CAT tools specialist, she is teaching current and emerging tools both at KU Leuven (BE) and Leiden Universities(NL). Iulianna has been recently appointed Academic Adviser for JIAMCATT at the European Commission. Last but not least, Iulianna is actively involved in community projects, such as the revival of the eCoLo (electronic content localization) training platform and the development of the Language Technology Wiki.
Frieda Steurs is full professor at KU Leuven, Faculty of Arts, Campus Sint-Andries, Antwerp. She works in the field of terminology, language technology, specialised translation and multilingual document management.
As a member of the research group “Quantitative Lexicology and Variation Linguistics’ (QLVL), her research includes projects with industrial partners and public institutions. Frieda is the founder and former president of NL-TERM, the Dutch terminology association for both the Netherlands and Flanders, and currently chairs the ISO TC/37 standardisation committee for Flanders and the Netherlands. Furthermore, she is the president of TermNet, the International Network for Terminology (Vienna). As of the 1st of September 2016, Frieda has been working as the head of research and CEO of The Dutch Language Institute in Leiden (www.ivdnt.org)
