Round Table on the Future of Translation

Quo vadis? The work field of interpreters and translators has changed dramatically over the past decades. It is expected that developments in this area will continue. Technological developments in particular have led to strong discussions. What we see is that there is often a lot of unanimity in round table discussions, because the panel members often share the same profile. In this round table discussion, we would like to look at the future of the translation profession with an open mind and through the lenses of a very diverse group.

This round table session will be led by Jaap van der Meer (TAUS). Our panel will include the following professionals:
● Interpreters and translators: Ammerins Moss-de Boer and Lisa Horenberg
● Technology specialists: Peter van den Steene and Stephan Sportel
● Director of Resources of the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT): Jörgen Gren
● Interpreting and translation scholars: Frieda Steurs and Joke Daems

Some of the questions on the agenda are:
● How have the panellists experienced the technological trends of recent years?
● What does technology mean for supply and demand in their professional group?
● What trends do the panellists think will be successful?
● What can we expect from machine translation in the future and how can the professional group respond to developments in machine translation?
● Are there new technologies that play a mainly supportive role and leave the actual translating to the translator?
● What does the future of the translation profession look like?
● How can we ensure that the translation expertise of language professionals is/remains appreciated?
● Can technology help increase the visibility of the translator in business and society?
● How do language technology and fairness relate to each other?
